Buying a business with Clover? Check the payments before you take over.
The counter may be staying. The merchant account, equipment permissions, apps and settlement instructions still need a plan. Process Rite helps you identify what must be confirmed before the handover.

Start with the existing setup, not a replacement order.
A restaurant, deli, retail store or service business can look ready to trade while its payment setup is still tied to the seller. Before purchasing new hardware or cancelling anything, identify the provider on the existing agreement and the equipment actually included in the sale.
Clover’s own guidance says an ownership change can be handled through the previous owner’s provider when you stay with that provider. That is not a blanket promise that any used device can move to any account. The responsible provider must confirm the specific device and account route.
Keeping the provider
Ask which ownership-change process applies, what the new owner must submit and when the seller’s account stops taking payments.
Considering a switch
Check provisioning, hardware ownership, remaining agreements and migration requirements before accepting a proposal.
Buying used hardware
Obtain provider confirmation before paying. A working screen does not establish that the device can process for your business.

Check My Takeover Requirements
Tell us the business town, planned takeover date, existing Clover model and current provider if known. Describe what is staying and what needs to change. Do not include the seller’s login, merchant ID, bank details or card data.
What the takeover review should resolve
| Decision | Information to check | Confirmation needed |
|---|---|---|
| Account transition | Buyer’s entity, trading name, business location and handover date. | Provider application requirements, approval and activation sequence. |
| Equipment | Exact models, ownership, financing or rental obligations and included accessories. | Device eligibility, provisioning route and any replacement costs. |
| Menu and inventory | Items, modifiers, categories, prices, barcodes and the records you are entitled to receive. | Permitted export/import, configuration owner and testing. |
| Apps and customer obligations | Ordering, gift cards, loyalty, subscriptions and outstanding refunds. | Each vendor’s transfer rules and responsibility for old obligations. |
| Launch and reconciliation | Trading hours, staffing, internet readiness, receipts and closeout. | Who tests, who supports the launch and how first batches are reconciled. |
Keep the seller’s account and your new setup separate.
Do not rely on the seller’s password to operate after closing. Agree with the provider and the seller which records can be shared, which access must end and how the new owner receives legitimate access. Changes to a merchant account, payout destination or customer records belong in the provider’s approved process.
Outstanding gift cards, refunds, chargebacks, prepaid orders and app subscriptions need their own handover record. Identify the responsible party in your purchase and provider arrangements; changing the name on a receipt does not settle those questions.
Process Rite can help organize the payment and POS questions. The provider controls account approval and device eligibility. Your business-sale advisers handle the purchase agreement and allocation of liabilities.
A practical handover sequence
- Before committing: inventory the devices and agreements, identify the provider and request written reuse or replacement confirmation.
- Before the cutover: complete the required new-owner process, agree the activation sequence and prepare permitted item/menu data.
- Before taking live orders: review prices, taxes with your adviser, staff permissions, printers, order channels and receipts.
- At launch: use the provider’s approved test procedure for sale, void/refund, kitchen or barcode workflow and closeout. Record unresolved issues.
- After launch: reconcile the first batch and deposit, check recurring software charges and make sure the correct support contacts are available.
Timing depends on approval, equipment, app vendors and the complexity of the handover. Arrange any on-site work directly; no same-day activation or uninterrupted-service promise is made.
Check My Takeover RequirementsQuestions owners ask before taking over
Can I keep the Clover devices already in the business?
Possibly, but confirm the exact equipment and provider route first. Ownership of hardware and permission to use its payment configuration are separate questions.
Does the existing merchant account transfer with the business?
Do not assume that it does. Tell the current provider about the ownership change and obtain its requirements for the new owner, underwriting and activation.
Will menus, gift cards and apps move automatically?
No automatic migration is promised. Check each feature and vendor separately, including data access, outstanding balances, app subscriptions and who will test the result.
What can I send in the enquiry?
Your town, planned handover date, business type, device models and provider name if known. Do not include credentials, merchant IDs, financial account details or customer records. Arrange document review after contact.
Bring the handover date and the questions you cannot yet answer.
Process Rite accepts takeover enquiries from Clifton, Totowa, Paterson, Passaic, Wayne, Wallington and surrounding New Jersey communities. The first step is to clarify the existing setup and the decisions that need provider confirmation.
