Small card sales? Compare the transaction fee as carefully as the rate.

See how average ticket, transaction count and recurring fees affect payment costs. Model your assumptions, then request a review of the actual statement or proposal.

Start with your requirements. Confirm the written scope before committing.

A ten-cent charge matters more on a $5 sale than a $50 sale.

At a $5 card sale, a $0.10 transaction charge alone represents 2% of the sale. At $50 it represents 0.2%. Both exclude every other fee. A bagel shop, café or convenience counter needs to compare the transaction charge and percentage together, using its own payment count.

Process Rite reviews the complete picture: average ticket, transaction count, card-present versus remote sales, recurring fees, software and equipment. A lower headline percentage does not establish a lower total bill. Start with one representative month and identify the costs being compared.

Model one card-payment mix

Enter figures from one written quote or statement. Empty fields contain no advertised rate. Calculate different rates or channels separately.

Enter all five assumptions to calculate.

Volume = average sale × count. Modeled cost = volume × percentage ÷ 100 + count × transaction charge + entered fixed fees. Cost share = modeled cost ÷ volume × 100. Excludes charges you did not enter, varying card/channel rates, chargebacks, one-time costs and taxes. This simplified estimate is not an offer, audit or savings forecast.

A worked example with stated assumptions.

Illustrative inputValue
Average card sale$8
Monthly card transactions2,000
Percentage charge2.5%
Transaction charge$0.10
Fixed fees included$30

These invented assumptions produce $16,000 in modeled volume, $400 in percentage charges, $200 in transaction charges and $30 in fixed fees: $630 total, or 3.9375% of modeled volume. This is arithmetic, not Process Rite pricing or a merchant result.

Changing only the transaction charge from $0.10 to $0.05 changes the model by $100 at 2,000 transactions. A real alternative may also change the percentage, fixed fees, hardware, agreement or eligibility. Compare those together before calling a difference savings.

Build a complete comparison.

Separate these itemsWhat to check
Sales channelsCounter, keyed, online and remote payments can carry different pricing. Do not apply one assumed rate to all channels.
Billable eventsUse actual counts where available. Refunds, authorizations or other events may be billed differently under the agreement.
Recurring chargesList account, gateway, software, equipment and other recurring charges. Separate processing costs from operating tools.
Pricing structureThis simple percentage-plus-fee model does not reconstruct interchange-plus billing. Review actual pass-through and markup lines separately.
ConditionsIdentify minimums, annual charges, promotional expiry, equipment obligations and agreement length in the written proposal.

What to prepare for the first conversation.

  1. Business and town: explain what customers buy and where they pay.
  2. Ticket and count: share the typical card sale and monthly card transaction count. Label estimates.
  3. Current provider and POS: include product names without account numbers or credentials.
  4. Your question: a confusing fee, a new proposal, changing payment mix or planned equipment purchase.

This form is for a summary. Do not paste card numbers, bank details, merchant IDs or an unredacted statement. Arrange document review after contact. If you have not opened, label projections and see the opening checkout plan.

Questions before you request a review

Does this quote a special small-ticket program?

No. The tool calculates your assumptions. Eligibility, pricing and provider conditions need separate written confirmation.

Is this my exact effective rate?

It is a modeled cost share for the inputs entered. A historical processing-rate review needs a consistent statement period and clearly defined fees and card volume.

Should I add a customer surcharge?

This model does not recommend customer-facing fees. Before implementing any surcharge, discount or dual-pricing arrangement, have the provider confirm applicable rules, configuration and disclosures.

Can you review the POS workflow too?

Describe the cost question alongside the counter, menu or ordering requirements. A cost review does not itself confirm a hardware change or migration.
